The growing amount of plastic waste and microplastic are a major problem for our environment that needs to be solved now. We are committed to solving this problem out of responsibility towards the environment as well as future generations and are devote to develop sustainable solutions based on bioplastics at the Institute of Biopolymers and Sustainability at Hof University.

With our conference BiopolyMEHR - Scientific and Industrial Trendswe want to create a possibility for companies and research institutes, concerned with plastics and recycling, as well as the interested public to exchange and inform themselves about a the latest trends, state of the art and results from science concerning sustainability and the use of bioplastics.

Help us to make a significant impact on environmental protection and to present new and innovative approaches to solving the problems caused by the use of petrochemical-based plastics to a wider public. This will be achieved through talks and discussions on the main topics of the conference synthesis, processing, application and the degradation of bioplastics.

Key aspects


The extraction of bioplastics lays the basis for all material-specific properties. Research and developments in this area enable the production of more economical and efficient types and drive the bioplastics industry forward.


The processing of bioplastics into a product or polymer blend is a process with a high number of influencing factors. Constituent materials, their proportions, processing aids, additives, the design of the processing machines and the processing parameters create complex possibilities for the producing of various products.

The material recycling of bioplastics can theoretically be used to the same extent as with conventional plastics. The detection, separation and processing create completely new challenges in practice due to the special properties, that need to be solved. The approaches for the chemical and thermal recycling are equally for interest.


Applications of bioplastic should be able to use all the advantages of the materials as far as possible and also be able to convert the disadvantages into advantages through a clever product development strategy. Most products can currently only be used in niche applications. Cost-benefit ratio and consumer acceptance are often too unfavorable. Research and development must be starting in order to be able to apply the application of bioplastics on a broad front.


The degradation behavior of the many bioplastics is one of the core competencies for the selection of these materials for many applications. The degradation process is linked to a variety of factors and decomposition reactions. Their understanding and influencing is the key to the focused adjust and control of the degradation behavior.

The highlight with the voting and the talks

To determine the order of the 30 minutes long presentations, all speakers give a 2-minute pitch at the beginning of the session.

After each pitch, all participants take a vote on how broad the interest in the presentation is.

To avoid overlapping of presentations with large response, the order of talks is determined by the results of voting.

The presentations with the most votes will receive more discussion time. All other talks will be held as usual one after the other with chairman*woman and short discussion in a morning and afternoon session.

Following the talks and poster session a best talk and the best poster price will be awarded. Each of the participants can cast its vote, which will be included in the evaluation of the expert jury. The author of the talk and the poster will each receive an award and a material prize.

Digital exchange between users and

There will be scope for a casual and informal exchange with experts from the application and science field during the conference.

For this purpose general discussion rounds and breakout sessions will be available. There will also be open whiteboards during the breaks and discussion rounds to create the possibility of open and subsequently individual exchange.

An important aspect of the online conference is the possibility for conference participants to invite speakers and other participants to personal discussions via chat at any time.

Registration for the conference is free of charge due to the public funding of the event by the European Social Fund, the Upper Franconia Foundation and the Friends and Sponsors of Hof Uiversity of Applied Sciences.

The participation in the conference includes all lectures and offered events from 23.02 to 24.02.2022.


The conference "Bioplastics - Science Meets Industry" takes place as part of the funded "BiopolyMEHR" knowledge transfer project.

Currently, biopolymers and the intelligent use of sustainable and renewable raw materials are central topics in research and industry. The awareness for ecological action has increased strongly among consumers and users over the last 5-10 years. This increase in awareness requires new valuable ecologically and sustainable products. For bioplastics processing industry to be able to offer new solutions to consumers, it is necessary for know-how has to be transferred to the industrial sectors (1) plastics industry, (2) textile industry and (3) test equipment industry in the Upper Franconian catchment area of the project.

A big range of training contents/training methods will be developed in order to achieve the knowledge transfers’ aim. For this purpose, five network meetings, two symposia and one conference are held annually on the following topics at the Hof University of Applied Sciences:

Bioplastics (commercial, research)
Film, sheet and profile extrusion
Compounding with natural additives
Injection molding
Recycling (material, biological)
Life cycle assessment, certifications

Impulses of these events lead to research cooperations and product developments with biopolymers.

The "BiopolyMEHR" project is supported by three funding bodie

ESF - The European Social Fund

The European Social Fund (ESF) is one of the European Union's Structural Funds. Approximately 17 million euros are at the disposal of the Bavarian Ministry of Science for networking activities and the transfer of knowledge from universities to companies in the eligibility period from 2014 to 2020. Labor market-related projects at local, regional and national level are supported. Concerning the university sector, the initiative focuses an increase in networking between industry and science.


The Oberfrankenstiftung (Upper Franconian Foundation) promotes science and research in the administrative district Upper Franconian. In 2002, the foundation's purpose was extended to the promotion of science with new regulations made in February 2017. Particular eligible for funding are profile-sharpening projects/institutes, projects of the Technology Alliance Upper Franconia (TAO) or cooperation projects of the Upper Franconian universities among themselves and other one-time measures. The Upper Franconian Foundation grants a fixed subsidy rate, which applies equally to personnel and material costs. It is determined flexibly according to the importance of the project. Entideld for application are the Upper Franconian universities or other groups/clusters who carry out scientific projects in Upper Franconia or with Upper Franconian reference.

Friends and promoters of Hof University

The “Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Hochschule Hof e.V.” (Association of Friends and Sponsors of Hof University of Applied Sciences) attended the task to promote the university as a local research and teaching institution by supporting its social and educational mission. The support concerns material and non-material research and teaching at the university, the development of self-sustaining research institutions, the promotion of knowledge transfer from the university to the economy (especially the increase of the willingness to cooperate in order to promote innovations in products and processes) or the development of competence-oriented practical solutions for the local economy. The association’s support especially covers the lack of funds or the increase of funds where needed. In order to achieve the already mentioned objectives at best, the members should actively participate in the activities of the association. All members should act as ambassadors of the university and the region. A broad network of supporters of Hof University of Applied Sciences - including companies and private individuals - creates a platform promising the most possible success.
